Mélenchon announces 2027 French presidential bid
Key Points
  • Jean-Luc Mélenchon confirms 2027 presidential run
  • Faces challenges from vote-splitting left candidates and high voter antipathy
  • Controversies include antisemitism accusations and call for international front

The leader of La France Insoumise said he would run again because he has the most experience, arguing his radical left economic programme could counter the far-right National Rally. At a press conference, Mélenchon warned: 'We are threatened by a widespread war, we are threatened by a spectacular change in the climate, and now we have an economic and social crisis approaching.'

Mélenchon faces challenges including a crowded field of left-wing candidates that could split the vote, according to media reports. Opponents see him as an increasingly divisive and provocative figure. Polls at the end of 2025 found he was the political figure in France who attracted the most hatred from voters; commentators and pollsters have said this antipathy would prevent him from winning.

Jean-Marie Le Pen of our times

Controversies have also dogged his campaign. The Socialist party accused Mélenchon of 'intolerable antisemitic comments' and 'caricature conspiracy theories' after public rallies. According to The Guardian, centre-left MEP Raphaël Glucksmann described him as the 'Jean-Marie Le Pen of our times'. Mélenchon apologised on social media for mangling Glucksmann's name, saying: 'I'm the first one who is sorry, thinking about those it hurt.' He denied any antisemitism. Additionally, Mélenchon called for a common front with Spain against war in the Middle East.

It remains unclear whether left parties will unite behind a single candidate or whether Marine Le Pen will be able to run given her legal challenges. Public reaction to Mélenchon's announcement is still emerging.
