McDonald's Gains Approval for New Keighley Outlet with Community Benefits
Key Points
  • McDonald's gains approval for new Keighley outlet with community benefits
  • Approval follows minimal objections and includes job creation and economic uplift
  • Separate revamp plans submitted for Nottingham restaurant with modern features

Council planning officers approved McDonald's request for another fast food chain stating the new site will benefit the community. The new McDonald's site is expected to create 60 full-time equivalent jobs once opened, in addition to jobs during construction. The redeveloped site would bring an anticipated uplift in business rates revenue, benefiting the local economy.

The application for McDonald's and its Drive Thru at Gresley Road in Keighley, Bradford, was approved after receiving just four objections. McDonald's argued that its proposed site on the A650 northern bypass serves residents of communities north of Keighley, including Beechcliffe and Utley, as well as transient custom. McDonald's research shows Keighley has roughly 53,000 residents, which they believe is sufficient to support two restaurants trading well in close proximity.

In terms of economic benefits, it is envisaged that 60 full-time equivalent jobs would be created on site once the restaurant is opened in addition to those during the construction phase.

The latest McDonald's outlet on Gresley Road in Keighley is part of redevelopment plans for the old Alexandra Mills location. Separately, McDonald's has submitted revamp plans for its restaurant in Castle Bridge Road, near Castle Marina Retail Park in Nottingham, to Nottingham City Council. The revamp plans include changing drive-thru boundaries, creating new 'click and serve' spaces for app users, installing two new electric car charging bays, and altering the restaurant's exterior with new windows and an access door.

The specific economic uplift in business rates revenue from the Keighley redevelopment has not been detailed, and the timeline for the opening of the new outlet remains unclear. Additionally, the exact changes to drive-thru boundaries and 'click and serve' spaces in Nottingham have not been specified.

The redeveloped site would bring about an anticipated uplift in business rates revenue, and the proposal, therefore, would have a positive benefit to the local economy. The impact the development will have on the local economy is welcomed.
