Martin Lewis urges travel insurance as soon as you book
Key Points
  • Buy travel insurance as soon as you book to cover pre-trip cancellations.
  • Package holidays offer more protection than separate flight and hotel bookings.
  • Check Foreign Office advice and policy exclusions like war coverage.

Speaking on his ITV show, Lewis said that travel insurance should be taken out immediately after booking. He explained that half of the cover is for cancellations before the trip, and if you have already booked but lack insurance, you should get it as soon as possible. Lewis warned that booking flights and hotels separately risks losing money if flights are cancelled, whereas package holidays are protected under Package Holiday Regulations, meaning you get everything back if a flight is cancelled.

Travel specialist Rob Brooks echoed this, stating that package holidays are safer because with separate bookings, you are on your own when things go wrong. Lewis cautioned that some travel insurance policies exclude coverage for wars, and advised checking the Foreign Office's travel advice for the destination, as different levels of advice affect insurance coverage. For group holidays, he recommended a group insurance policy so that if one person cannot go, the whole group is covered.

He also noted that if you have two travel insurance policies, you cannot claim from both; you can only recover your costs. When claiming, you must answer honestly if asked about other insurance. A viewer named David shared that his travel insurance covered a £5,000 rescheduling fee when a group member became pregnant and could not travel.

Lewis emphasised the golden rule: do not cancel voluntarily yourself, as doing so means you lose all your rights to a refund and insurance coverage. On spending abroad, Lewis advised paying in the local currency rather than pounds to get a better exchange rate. 75-3%.

For cash, he suggested using a Bureau de Change comparison site before travelling or a specialist card at an ATM abroad if the charge is small relative to the amount withdrawn. He warned that if you use a credit card abroad, you must pay it off in full each month to avoid interest. uk stated there are no immediate issues and preparations are being made to avoid disruption.
