Martin Clunes ends British Doc Martin and Men Behaving Badly
Key Points
  • Martin Clunes confirms the end of British Doc Martin and no Men Behaving Badly revival.
  • Clunes praises the American Doc Martin remake and may return for more episodes.
  • Clunes recently portrayed Huw Edwards and cites financial reasons for continuing work.

Clunes said there are no fresh storylines to explore for the cantankerous GP after 79 episodes of the British Doc Martin, describing the incarnation as comprehensively done. He also confirmed there are no plans to resurrect his on-screen partnership with Neil Morrissey for Men Behaving Badly, explaining that the show would not be funny in today's climate. Clunes remains in regular contact with former co-star Neil Morrissey, describing their bond as one of the key friendships in his life.

Clunes has enjoyed appearing as the father of Martin Best in the American Doc Martin remake Best Medicine. He disclosed to Saga Magazine that he could well return to the American version, which is produced by his wife Philippa Braithwaite. Clunes said he gets kind of tickled by seeing the American show and thinks they might get him back for more episodes. He revealed to Alan Titchmarsh on ITV's Love Your Weekend that he is a great admirer of the new American incarnation, noting lead actor Josh Charles is really good and that the first series has been a success so they are going again. The American series is shot in upstate New York but looks like it is in Maine.

Clunes' most recent screen appearance was portraying disgraced former BBC newsreader Huw Edwards in the two-part docudrama Power: The Downfall of Huw Edwards. He featured in scenes depicting Edwards' double life, interwoven with information sourced from the real individuals who first brought the story to light. Clunes said he takes whatever gig comes along because running his farm and keeping animals fed is expensive, so he cannot afford to retire.

Huw Edwards was once among the BBC's highest-paid newsreaders, serving as a familiar face on News at Ten for many decades. In 2024, Edwards pleaded guilty to three counts of making indecent images of children at Westminster Magistrates' Court in July. Clunes' portrayal highlighted this fall from grace.
