Trial begins for alleged IS plot against Swift concerts
Key Points
  • The trial of Beran A. accused of plotting an IS-inspired attack on Taylor Swift's Vienna concerts has begun.
  • Beran A. plans to plead guilty to most terrorism-related charges, but the specifics remain unclear.
  • U.S. intelligence played a role in canceling the concerts, and a broader plot involving co-defendants in multiple countries was abandoned.

The trial of Beran A., a 21-year-old Austrian accused of plotting an Islamic State (IS)-inspired attack on Taylor Swift concerts in Vienna, opened Tuesday, according to reports. The three August 2024 concerts were canceled after authorities said they foiled the alleged plot, which prosecutors claim aimed to kill as many onlookers as possible using knives or homemade explosives.

Beran A., a 21-year-old Austrian citizen, faces charges of terrorist offenses and membership in a terrorist organization, carrying a potential 20-year prison term, court documents show. His defense lawyer, Anna Mair, has stated that her client intends to plead guilty to most charges, though she did not specify which ones, leaving uncertainty over the scope of his admissions.

Prosecutors further claim Beran A. networked with other IS members, discussed buying weapons and producing bombs, and swore allegiance to the group. When investigators searched his apartment on August 7, 2024, they reportedly uncovered bomb-making materials.

U.S. intelligence agencies provided crucial information that contributed to the decision to cancel the concerts, officials have said, though the exact nature of that intelligence has not been disclosed.

The trial also involves co-defendant Arda K., against whom prosecutors have filed terrorism-related charges, according to reports. Prosecutors maintain that Beran A., Arda K., and a third man, Hasan E., had planned simultaneous attacks in Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and the United Arab Emirates during Ramadan 2024 in the name of IS. Those plans, however, were abandoned for reasons that remain unclear. Beran A. and Arda K. allegedly did not follow through with their roles in Turkey and the UAE, and Beran A. returned to Vienna, where prosecutors say he began plotting the Swift concert attack. The current legal status of Arda K. is not known, and it remains uncertain whether a broader cell exists.

Austrian prosecutors further assert that on March 11, 2024, Hasan E. stabbed a security guard at the Grand Mosque in Mecca, Saudi Arabia. He reportedly remains in Saudi pre-trial detention.

The concert cancellations devastated fans, but many so-called Swifties turned their disappointment into community, gathering in Vienna to trade friendship bracelets and hold singalongs, reports said. The trial, being held in the city of Wiener Neustadt, is set to continue on May 12, the court confirmed.
