Man guilty of torturing and murdering 93-year-old
Key Points
  • Samuel Field found guilty of murdering 93-year-old Martin Glynn after 28-hour torture ordeal.
  • Field was paranoid from cannabis use and interrogated Glynn over an imagined conspiracy.
  • Glynn died three months after the attack, having named Field as his killer.

Samuel Field was convicted by a jury of seven men and five women at Northampton Crown Court on May 6 after less than four hours of deliberation. He will be sentenced on May 29. According to prosecutor Adrian Langdale KC, Field made some admissions about what he had done but these fell a long way short of being the full story of the brutality of the assault.

Field said Glynn was injured and he was 'ever so sorry', and told officers 'I know what I have done'. When asked about injuries, Field said he was 'lying for ten hours' and 'trying to get the truth out of him'. The prosecution said Field was seemingly high on cannabis, suffering from paranoia caused by cannabis consumption, and deliberately not sleeping.

He questioned Glynn about an 'imagined conspiracy' and assaulted him when he did not answer as desired. The assault was entirely pointless, entirely unjustified, but seemingly driven by Field's self-induced state. Glynn was forced into a 'recorded interrogation' which has been recovered.

Field was a 'ticking time-bomb' in the days and hours leading up to the attack, having become threatening and abusive to family, a shopkeeper, his landlord, and probation officers with increasingly bizarre allegations. Multiple reports indicate that hidden camera footage from inside the flat showed Field continuing as though nothing had happened while Glynn lay motionless on the floor. Field waited 24 hours before calling 999.

Police found Glynn lying in a shower tray. Glynn never walked again after the attack, according to the prosecution. He died in Kettering General Hospital on December 26, 2024.

The attack on Mohamed Mahmoud Snnai was described as 'grievous and unprovoked' by Sussex Police Det Insp James Meanwell.

Multiple reports state that Glynn used his final words on his deathbed to name his killer, and told detectives he had been blackmailed into handing over thousands of pounds to Field. Detective Sergeant Megan Scotney stated that Field exploited their friendship and tortured Glynn over 10 hours, inflicting horrific injuries that cost him his life. According to Scotney, Glynn lived independently and was loyal to Field.

m. m. that afternoon, Glynn was sprawled helplessly on the living-room floor.

In an unrelated case, Cameron Grocutt, 24, punched 66-year-old Mohamed Mahmoud Snnai on the back of the head in Eastbourne, East Sussex, in October. Snnai was a complete stranger to Grocutt. Witnesses heard a 'sickening thump' as Snnai fell backwards and hit his head on the pavement.

He was taken to hospital, his life support was later withdrawn, and he died on 12 November. Grocutt initially admitted causing grievous bodily harm without intent and was charged with manslaughter over Snnai's death. He pleaded guilty to manslaughter at Lewes Crown Court in February and was jailed for four years and four months.

Sussex Police Det Insp James Meanwell described the attack as 'grievous and unprovoked', adding that the incident was isolated and did not pose a wider threat to the community.
