A man has been sentenced to nine months in prison for gross animal cruelty against dairy cows on a farm in Borgholm municipality on Öland, according to reports from Kalmar District Court. The case, which involved two men accused of the same crime, resulted in one conviction while the second man was fully acquitted. The animal abuse was exposed through hidden camera footage recorded by the animal rights organization Djurrättsalliansen and broadcast on TV4's investigative program Kalla fakta in December last year.
The footage reportedly showed two men kicking and hitting cows with manure scrapers, and in one instance, pushing a manure scraper down a cow's throat. Following the conviction, the Kalmar County Administrative Board has initiated proceedings to investigate a potential animal ban. According to communications chief Christina Karlberg, the board conducted inspections of the farm in December and found serious deficiencies that resulted in a penalty order.
A follow-up visit in mid-February showed significant improvements had been made, with only minor deficiencies remaining. The board has stated it will continue monitoring to ensure improvements are sustained.
