A man has died after falling a number of floors inside a building on Colmore Row in Birmingham city centre, West Midlands Police have confirmed. The victim, who has not been named, was treated by paramedics at the scene before being taken to hospital with serious injuries, but died a short time later despite the efforts of medical staff. The death is not being treated as suspicious, the force said, and a report is being prepared for the coroner.
A police spokesperson provided an update: "We’re currently in Colmore Row Birmingham city centre, after a man is understood to have fallen a number of floors within a building. He has been taken to hospital with serious injuries. " Officers remained on site for several hours and no arrests have been made.
Detectives have stated that there were no signs of foul play, and the death is being treated as an accident pending further inquiries. Police have assured the public that there is no wider threat to safety. The coroner will now investigate the circumstances of the death.
The deceased is a man in his 40s, according to police. The incident happened just after 18:20 BST on Sunday, when emergency services were alerted. Colmore Row, a busy street in the city’s business district known for its bars and restaurants, would have been filled with people at the time.
Police added that formal identification is yet to take place, but the man's family have been informed. The force has not yet released the man's identity, and it may take several days for formal proceedings to be completed. Multiple emergency vehicles, including police cars and ambulances, descended on the area.
A large section of the road was cordoned off, and members of the public were asked to steer clear while investigators worked. An ambulance service representative stated that multiple crews were sent to ensure a rapid medical response. The police cordon remained in place until late Sunday night as forensic officers examined the scene.
The nearby venue Henman & Cooper posted on Facebook that it would be closed on Sunday evening due to "unforeseen circumstances". The coroner will determine the exact cause of death in due course. West Midlands Police are continuing to investigate and have appealed for any witnesses to come forward.
