Devin Dube was found hiding in a van on Tower Street about 45 minutes after the Tuesday afternoon attack and arrested without incident, multiple reports indicate. He was charged with murder, assault and battery causing serious bodily injury over 60, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon over 60, and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon. Dube was arraigned Wednesday in Marlborough District Court, where a not guilty plea was entered on his behalf, and he was ordered held without bail pending a 20-day psychiatric evaluation at Bridgewater State Hospital.
Dube used a typical skateboard with a wooden platform and metal wheels in the attack, according to Middlesex County District Attorney Marian Ryan. His sister initially called 911, and both his sister and father were treated for facial and upper body injuries at a hospital and later released. The skateboard had not been found as of Tuesday.
Dube had previous contact with Hudson police and an extensive criminal history spanning years, the district attorney said. In 2020, he attempted to break into a home while a couple slept inside, throwing a planter through a glass door and threatening them with a knife. In 2023, he was arrested for violating a restraining order by following the same couple's son in his car, and in 2024, he was involved in an altercation at a skate park where he allegedly yelled racial slurs and threatened people.
A court-appointed forensic psychologist, Dr. Hilary Novak, reported that Dube showed a number of psychiatric symptoms, including ongoing auditory hallucinations and a history of schizophrenia. Dr.
Novak had previously evaluated Dube in 2023 and noted he had not taken his medication, and Dube reported hallucinations on the day of the attack that killed his grandmother. The specific motive or trigger for the attack on his grandmother remains unclear, and the timeline and outcome of the psychiatric evaluation are pending.
