A man from Västervik municipality has been charged at Kalmar District Court with aggravated animal cruelty after his dog was reportedly subjected to serious neglect over an extended period. According to reports from SVT Småland, the dog, described as a shepherd-like breed, weighed nearly 74 kilograms and suffered from severe health issues.
The case reportedly began in 2025 after members of the public alerted the county administrative board, which subsequently filed a police report. Investigation findings indicate the dog was severely overweight and had extensive injuries including pressure sores, chronic wounds on its legs, deformed paws, and a significantly impaired movement pattern.
The county veterinarian, who reviewed photographs, videos, control reports, and medical records, assessed that the dog had been subjected to serious physical and psychological suffering for several months. The accused is alleged to have avoided veterinary care for the animal.
The case highlights concerns about animal welfare and the role of public reporting in identifying potential abuse cases. Authorities involved include the county administrative board, which initiated the investigation, and the county veterinarian who provided expert assessment of the dog's condition.
