Malta rejects appeals to save historic barracks
Key Points
  • Demolition approved for five-star hotel and apartments
  • Barracks were married quarters and endangered heritage site
  • Last chance is Court of Appeal

The barracks are part of Fort Chambray overlooking Gozo's main harbour, and were among the first married quarters for British troops in the empire. A heritage group named them one of Europe's seven most endangered heritage sites. Parts of the barracks will be incorporated into the hotel development, according to local reports.

Campaigners' last legal recourse is through the Court of Appeal, according to The Telegraph. According to Daily Express - Main, Daniel Cilia of Din l-Art Ħelwa Għawdex expressed disbelief at the demolition, calling the barracks a prime example of British colonial presence on Gozo. An unnamed campaigner described the decision as heartbreaking.

I don't understand how a building like this can be demolished.

It is very important for Gozo – the only British barracks on the island. It’s a prime example of the British colonial presence.
