Major fires devastate Brooklyn, Glasgow and Hope Estate warehouses
Key Points
  • A five-alarm fire in Brooklyn destroyed three industrial buildings, with extensive damage and no air quality concerns.
  • A Glasgow commercial building fire caused extensive damage and historic dome loss, with no casualties reported.
  • A Hope Estate warehouse fire was extinguished after rapid spread, saving an adjacent building with no injuries.

A massive five-alarm fire on the Sunset Park, Brooklyn, waterfront tore through three industrial buildings early Wednesday. The blaze broke out in Universal Food Distributors, a soda and potato chip distribution warehouse, around 12:20 a.m. Wednesday, according to multiple reports. FDNY Chief of Operations Kevin Woods described extensive damage to the Brooklyn buildings, calling them complete losses. Firefighters pumped about 15,000 gallons of water per minute on the Brooklyn fire, from land and from two fire boats, in a massive operation. Woods noted the main fire building in Brooklyn collapsed, with danger of some walls collapsing, and crews worked to prevent the fire from spreading to more waterfront properties. Water soaked a nearby furniture facility, and the roof collapsed on a tile company in Brooklyn, indicating the fire's widespread impact. A total of 270 fire and EMS personnel responded to the Brooklyn fire scene, with two firefighters treated for smoke inhalation. Woods stated there are no concerns regarding air quality from the Brooklyn fire smoke, offering some reassurance to residents. However, it is still unclear what sparked the Brooklyn blaze, leaving investigators to determine the origin.

In Glasgow, a commercial building fire on Union Street has caused extensive damage and the loss of the building's historic dome, according to reports. The fire was reported at 3:46 p.m. on Sunday, 8 March, affecting the ground floor of a four-storey commercial building, a Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said. At its height, 18 appliances and specialist resources were mobilized for the Glasgow fire, demonstrating the scale of the response. More than 250 firefighters have attended the Glasgow fire scene since the initial call, according to research sources. As of 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, 10 March, four fire appliances and one high reach vehicle remained at the Glasgow fire scene, with the response reduced to one fire appliance remaining as of 5:21 p.m. on Wednesday, 11 March. Firefighters continue to dampen down hotspots at the Glasgow fire scene, using high reach appliances and ground monitors, while crews are working with structural engineers to assess the stability of the remaining building. The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service advised the public to avoid the area of the Glasgow fire, and there are no reported casualties from the incident. A preliminary multi-agency investigation into the cause of the Glasgow fire is underway, though the trigger remains unknown.

Meanwhile, firefighters extinguished a warehouse building fire near the Cul-de-Sac roundabout early Monday morning in Hope Estate. Two fire engines, an ambulance, 11 firefighters, and the chief of the brigade were dispatched to the Hope Estate fire scene, according to reports. When emergency services arrived at the Hope Estate fire, half of the metal-clad building was already completely ablaze and had partially collapsed, indicating rapid spread. The emergency services' intervention saved an adjacent building in Hope Estate and required the use of four fire hoses at the height of the operation. No one was injured in the Hope Estate fire, and the Gendarmerie was on site, setting up a diversion to allow fire engines to refill with water from a fire hydrant 500 metres away. The Hope Estate fire was declared extinguished at 7:00 a.m., with fire fighters carrying out dousing to prevent reignition until 8:00 a.m. before leaving the scene around 8:30 a.m. The cause of the warehouse fire near the Cul-de-Sac roundabout in Hope Estate is not yet known, pending further inquiry.

Multiple industrial and agricultural fires have also occurred across Europe. A fire occurred in an agricultural building in Mönsterås, with emergency services on site, according to major media reports. The West Midlands Ambulance Service was called to a large industrial fire in Birmingham, and plumes of smoke were visible from an industrial unit on Lifford Lane in Birmingham, as reported by multiple sources. Emergency services responded to a fire at a wood industry company in Kallinge during the night, adding to the list of incidents. Investigations into the causes of these fires are ongoing.

In other responses, emergency services responded to a fire alarm at an unspecified location, as reported by major media with six sources. Fire Engineering reports on various fire and rescue incidents, including major fires, firefighter line-of-duty deaths, and more, according to research sources, indicating ongoing documentation of such events. The causes of several fires, including those in Mönsterås, Birmingham, Kallinge, and Hope Estate, are under investigation, with authorities working to pinpoint origins.
