M27 reopens after £83m roadworks project
Key Points
  • M27 fully reopened between junctions 5 and 7 on Wednesday morning.
  • Roadworks began in February 2024 and cost £83 million.
  • Temporary 50mph speed limit remains; 70mph expected by late June.

The M27 motorway between junction 5 at Eastleigh and junction 7 at Hedge End fully reopened at 06:00 BST on Wednesday, according to multiple reports. The roadworks, which began in February 2024, cost an estimated £83 million.

National Highways said it is in the 'final phase' of the scheme, but work is not yet fully complete. A temporary 50mph speed limit remains in place, with 70mph limits expected to be restored around late June. Overnight closures are scheduled to install permanent road signs, starting April 30.

The thick asphalt overlay of the M27 will ensure that the concrete stays stable for much longer and we won't need to replace it in a few years. The M27 at this location passes through several Noise Important Areas. The new low-noise surface will help to reduce the noise and will benefit the communities living near the road.

The works include a low-noise surface, drainage improvements, and safety upgrades to the central reservation, according to multiple reports. National Highways stated that the low-noise surface will reduce noise for nearby communities. The thick asphalt overlay will keep the concrete stable for longer and avoid replacement in a few years, the authority added.

The roadworks caused frustration among local residents and businesses. According to Daily Express - UK News, Bob Terris, director of Meachers Global Logistics, described how the delays reduced vehicle productivity, leading to higher costs and lower revenues for his company. The overnight closures and speed restrictions are expected to continue for several more weeks, with the full restoration of normal traffic conditions anticipated by late June. National Highways has not yet confirmed the exact number of overnight closures remaining or the total cost of the entire project including future phases.

It's reduced the productivity of the vehicles, so our costs are higher, and our revenues lower because we don't get paid if they're not moving.
