Lynx Hunt in Värmland Temporarily Halted by Court Decision

Key Points
  • The Administrative Court of Appeal in Sundsvall has temporarily halted a planned lynx hunt in Värmland.
  • The hunt was scheduled to begin on March 1 and would have allowed six lynxes to be shot, with a maximum of three adult females.
  • The Swedish Society for Nature Conservation appealed the original decision by the lower Administrative Court that had approved the hunting.

A planned lynx hunt in Värmland that was scheduled to begin on March 1 has been temporarily suspended. The Administrative Court of Appeal (Kammarrätten) in Sundsvall has decided that the Värmland County Administrative Board's previous decision regarding licensed lynx hunting will not apply for the time being. This decision comes while awaiting the court's final ruling on the matter.

The lower Administrative Court (Förvaltningsrätten) had initially given the green light for hunting in all counties, but the Swedish Society for Nature Conservation (Naturskyddsföreningen) appealed and requested a hunting ban. According to the earlier decision, six lynxes, with a maximum of three adult females, were to be shot in Värmland. David Höök, game manager at the Värmland County Administrative Board, expressed disappointment that the decision came so close to the planned hunting start, noting that many had likely planned to go out on Sunday.
