Luleå municipality has been named 'electric car rocket' by Miljöfordon Sverige, an award that recognizes clear progress in electrification of transport over a short period, according to the organization. The municipality attributes the recognition to long-term work, clear goals, and concrete measures that contribute to a sustainable transport system.
Ulrika Lundberg, chair of the Infrastructure and Service Committee, said: 'It feels great that we are named this year's rocket. It is of course a result of politically made decisions aimed at the municipality being climate neutral by 2030. Emissions from transport are a contributing share of the municipality's total emissions and it is also an area that we have control over and can influence ourselves.'
It feels great that we are named this year's rocket. It is of course a result of politically made decisions aimed at the municipality being climate neutral by 2030. Emissions from transport are a contributing share of the municipality's total emissions and it is also an area that we have control over and can influence ourselves.
Luleå has systematically increased the share of electric vehicles in its own fleet and expanded charging infrastructure at municipal facilities, making it easier to choose electric cars for work and reducing emissions, the municipality said. The electrification contributes to cutting climate impact, improving air quality, and creating a more sustainable urban environment.
The municipality considers itself at the forefront compared to many others in transport transition and views the award as confirmation it is on the right track, not a final goal, according to Luleå kommun. Future efforts include continuing to develop the vehicle fleet, expand charging infrastructure, and create conditions for sustainable transport. The award strengthens Luleå's role as an active actor in the climate transition.
While the specific criteria used by Miljöfordon Sverige for the 'elbilsraket' award have not been disclosed, Luleå's progress underscores how local governance and practical solutions can yield results. The exact percentage of electric vehicles in the municipal fleet and precise future targets beyond the award remain unspecified.
