  • Luleå Hockey to buy Coop Norrbotten Arena for 137 million SEK
  • Letter of intent signed; municipal committee to process on March 23
  • Luleå KK concerned about ice time; municipality assures no reduction

The municipality currently owns Coop Norrbotten Arena, while Luleå Hockey is responsible for its operation and maintenance under a long-term agreement. The arena is used by elite sports teams, associations, schools, and the general public. The purchase price of 137 million SEK was disclosed in the letter of intent, which serves as a framework for negotiations to make the process efficient and smooth, according to municipal director Anna Lindh Wikblad.

Luleå Hockey has long wanted to develop and invest in the arena, but the municipality could not prioritize these investments, prompting the club to seek ownership. A joint working group has done extensive work since last autumn in constructive dialogue with Luleå Hockey, according to officials. The letter of intent will be processed by the municipal building committee on March 23, as reported by multiple sources.

It is very gratifying that they have reached a principle agreement, which will be a good basis for further negotiations with the municipality towards a final agreement.

Luleå KK, a local skating club, has expressed concerns about losing ice time after the sale. Peter Andersson, chairman of Luleå KK, told Hockeysverige that more ice halls need to be built in Luleå and that his club has not received any communication from the municipality regarding ice time discussions. According to major media reports, Luleå KK has already been forced to leave the arena and seek training times elsewhere, such as in Sunderby. André Samuelsson, chairman of Sunderby SK, told Hockeysverige that there are too few training times and ice surfaces in Luleå.

Municipal councilor Fredrik Hansson (S) assured that the sale will not affect Luleå KK and that ice time will be at least the same as today. He stated at a press conference that the intention is to secure accessibility for other clubs, other ice sports, schools, and the public, and that rent levels should be reasonable and index-regulated, with no difference after a sale. The municipality will prioritize an agreement with Luleå Hockey before assessing the need for a new ice hall, Hansson added.

They have always had a constructive dialogue with broad political support regarding the forms for a takeover of Coop Norrbotten Arena.

Petter Stordalen, a Norwegian hotel magnate, visited Luleå and met with Luleå Hockey's incoming CEO Per Ekervhen to discuss future collaboration, according to major media reports. Ekervhen was secretive about the meeting, declining to disclose details. The nature of the potential collaboration remains unclear.

The arena will be renamed to Luleå Minecraft Arena next season, according to major media reports. There will be a major renovation and a new logo for the arena, with plans including expanded training facilities, locker rooms, and increased spectator capacity, as reported by multiple sources. According to SVT Nyheter, Stefan Enbom described the arena's parking lot as a 'leråker' (mud field).

Securing the development of Coop Norrbotten Arena and the entire area with the four ice halls is one of the club's most important future issues.

Several unknowns remain. It is not yet known what specific guarantees will be included in the final sale agreement to ensure ice time for other clubs. The exact development plans and investment amounts Luleå Hockey intends to undertake have not been disclosed. Whether the sale will proceed as planned and what conditions will be attached to the final agreement are also unclear. The nature of the potential collaboration with Petter Stordalen has not been revealed, and the terms of the naming rights deal for Luleå Minecraft Arena have not been confirmed.

At a press conference, Fredrik Hansson said he had listened to Luleå Hockey and their arguments, and thereafter given the municipal director Anna Lindh Wikblad the assignment to produce a decision basis for the municipal council regarding a sale of the facility to Luleå Hockey. Anna Lindh Wikblad described the letter of intent as a jointly developed framework for negotiations, intended to make the process efficient and smooth, and to prevent new major challenges from arising.

Through the letter of intent, the club will be able to become more concrete in its thoughts for the future.

According to SVT Nyheter, Stefan Enbom described that Luleå Hockey hopes to realize long-held visions with the purchase, which are necessary for the club. He also stated that without developing the arena, Luleå Hockey cannot have elite teams in five years. The sale, if finalized, would mark a significant shift in the ownership and management of the arena, with implications for ice sports in the region.
