Luleå Ends Free Sportlov Passes, Shifts Focus to Summer Swimming School

Key Points
  • Luleå ends free sportlov swimming and ski passes
  • Citizen proposal that provided passes is discontinued
  • Municipality plans themed swimming hall activities during sportlov

The decision marks a shift from a program initiated two years ago, when a class at Porsöskolan submitted a citizen proposal for free swimming and ski lift passes during sportlov for all residents up to 18 years old, according to sources. That proposal was implemented with funds within the framework of citizen proposals, but it will not be taken up this year, sources say. In place of the free passes, the municipality plans activities with different themes such as disco and Melodifestivalen in the swimming halls during sportlov, as reported.

Politicians are choosing to invest in swimming school for children during the summer instead, sources indicate. As an alternative access method, Luleå residents can now 'borrow' a culture or sports experience at the library, with 16 swimming passes, five ski passes, and a variety of tickets to elite basketball and dance and music at Kulturens hus available, according to reports. The library's initiative began after politicians heard rumors of similar programs elsewhere in the country and tasked staff with investigating, sources say.
