Luke Sayers seen with new partner amid defamation lawsuit from ex-wife Cate
Key Points
  • Luke Sayers was seen with new partner Alexandra Elms amid a defamation lawsuit from ex-wife Cate.
  • The lawsuit stems from a scandal involving an explicit photo posted on social media, leading to Sayers' resignation as Carlton president.
  • Cate alleges defamation through intimate disclosures, while Sayers has lodged a defence claiming she made a provocative comment.

According to the Daily Mail, Luke Sayers and Alexandra Elms were walking through a park near Sayers' multimillion-dollar East Melbourne apartment, with Sayers declining to speak when approached. The sighting comes amid an ongoing legal battle where Cate Sayers launched a Supreme Court action after a scandal involving an explicit photo escalated into a public fallout. Cate accuses Luke Sayers in court documents of blaming her for publishing a picture of his penis on his X account at 7:40am on January 8, 2025, a post that also tagged Naomi Driver, a female executive from Bupa, one of Carlton's principal sponsors.

Despite the AFL clearing Sayers, he stepped down as Carlton president anyway. Cate alleges she was defamed after Sayers provided a statutory declaration to the AFL Commission's integrity unit while he was being investigated over the photo. Her lawyers allege Sayers revealed intimate details about her sexual history and mental health which was purposely meant to paint his then-wife as unstable, untrustworthy, erratic, and mentally disturbed.

Sayers lodged his defence to the defamation proceedings on Wednesday. In his defence, Sayers claims that Cate told him 'let's see how you get out of this one' a day after the infamous image was posted on social media. The Daily Mail also reports that Luke Sayers' daughter Bronte is following Alexandra Elms on Instagram, and that Elms previously dated V8 Supercars driver James Courtney in 2019.

Luke Sayers had been in a relationship with another woman, a Melbourne professional, which began after his split from Cate but ended last year. The case contains highly sensitive family matters. According to Sue Chrysanthou SC, Cate Sayers prefers for the trial to be decided by jury but forgot to tick a box on paperwork.

Any applications to amend writs, decide the mode of trial, and possibly transfer the matter to the Federal Court must be made by mid-May. The trial has been pencilled in to kick-off in the Victorian Supreme Court on November 23 and is expected to last for five to seven days if not transferred to the Federal Court.
