PoliticsPolitics
Key Points
  • Lord Chadlington retires from the House of Lords and quits the Conservative Party after a standards probe into PPE deals.
  • This highlights ongoing scrutiny of political conduct during the Covid pandemic and potential conflicts of interest.
  • The exact details of the PPE contracts and further implications of the investigation remain unclear.

An investigation by the House of Lords Commissioner for Standards found Lord Chadlington breached the code of conduct over his role in assisting a subsidiary of SGHL to secure PPE contracts. Lord Chadlington was non-executive chairman and a shareholder of SGHL. The Lords Conduct Committee rejected an appeal from Lord Chadlington and recommended he should be suspended for a year.

This is the third investigation into Lord Chadlington's conduct during the Covid pandemic. The investigation was brought after a complaint by the Covid-19 Bereaved Families for Justice in March last year, following evidence submitted to the Covid Inquiry. Evidence given by Lord Chadlington to the UK Covid-19 Inquiry detailed his contact with ministers and peers involved in PPE procurement, leading to a fresh investigation.

' Lord Chadlington also said, 'Any errors that I did make were honest. ' The specific PPE contracts secured by the SGHL subsidiary with Lord Chadlington's assistance have not been disclosed.
