London Marathon may move to earlier date due to heat
Key Points
  • London Marathon may move to earlier date due to rising temperatures
  • Organisers observed Paris Marathon's sustainability measures
  • London Marathon already has carbon removal tax and other green initiatives

Brasher said the marathon's organisers are considering a date change, noting that the event was originally held on 29 March in 1981. He added that the world is heating up and that moving the race is a possibility. The London Marathon has observed the Paris Marathon's sustainability measures, including a ban on single-use water cups and bottles in favour of a refill system, with interest.

Brasher confirmed that an employee ran the Paris Marathon to gain feedback on sustainability. The London Marathon already has several green initiatives: it provides Buxton Natural Mineral Water every three miles from miles 3-12, then every two miles from miles 12-24; it uses recycled plastic bottles in a circular system; and it employs electric and solar generators. Brasher noted that the London Marathon is the only marathon in the world that mandates a carbon removal tax for international participants, with the funds used to remove carbon from the atmosphere.

He emphasised the need to consider health, safety, and temperature when making decisions about the event's future.
