39pm. It will use Azuma trains rather than steam locomotives. Inaugural journeys will feature Celtic rock band The Red Hot Chilli Pipers and onboard menus inspired by traditional cuisine such as haggis, neeps and tatties.

The Flying Scotsman service first ran in 1862 and adopted its iconic title in 1924. It became famous for simultaneous 10am departures from London and Edinburgh and was the first steam locomotive to officially reach 100mph. LNER also revealed details of its upcoming 'Serenza' train fleet, which will feature reclining seats in first class and onboard water refill stations.

The new generation trains, manufactured by CAF, will be 10-car and accommodate 569 passengers. They are expected in the coming years and will enhance journeys on the East Coast Main Line. The exact date of the timetable changes and how long the service had been reduced have not been specified.

The delivery timeline for the Serenza trains has not been announced.
