Lindesberg trials hand scanner to improve waste sorting
Key Points
  • A hand scanner trial at Södra Måle recycling center aims to improve waste sorting from April 9 for three weeks.
  • The scanner uses software developed by student company ReScan, which recently won sustainability awards.
  • ReScan will compete in the Swedish Championships in May, but scanner effectiveness and permanence are unknown.

The scanner, which visitors can use to scan their waste and see how it should be sorted, is part of an effort to enhance recycling efficiency. According to SVT Örebro (official), Michael Lindström described the tool as a convenient solution for handling unsorted bags or boxes, making it easier to do it right. The software powering the scanner was developed by ReScan, a UF company started by students at Lindeskolan.

ReScan recently received the awards Årets AI-företag (AI Company of the Year) and Årets ekologiskt hållbara företag (Ecologically Sustainable Company of the Year) at the Örebro County UF gala in March, highlighting its innovation in sustainability. Looking ahead, ReScan will compete in the Swedish Championships (SM) in May, potentially expanding its impact. However, the effectiveness of the scanner at identifying waste types remains unclear, and it is unknown whether it will be permanently implemented after the trial.

It is perfect when you have gathered that bag or box that is not sorted. Now there is an easy way to do it right.

Michael Lindström, Strategy for waste and recycling

According to SVT Örebro (official), Daniel Flodström expressed hope that the scanner is used frequently during the trial to gather visitor feedback and assess its performance, though specific evaluation methods and funding details have not been disclosed.

The hope is that the scanner is used frequently during the period so that we can find out what visitors think about the solution and at the same time investigate how well it performs.
