Leaked Pentagon email threatens UK Falklands sovereignty
Key Points
  • Leaked Pentagon email proposes reassessing US support for UK sovereignty over Falklands
  • Email also suggests suspending Spain from NATO over refusal to support Iran bombing campaign
  • UK insists sovereignty rests with Falkland Islanders, who voted to remain British in 2013

The leaked email, reported by eight major media outlets, indicates that the US may reconsider its longstanding backing of the UK's position on the Falklands. The proposal is said to stem from anger that NATO allies, including Britain, did not provide adequate support for Operation Epic Fury, the US bombing campaign against Iran. The email also recommended suspending Spain from NATO for refusing to allow US warplanes to be based in or fly over Spanish territory during the operation.

Downing Street has insisted that the UK's position on the Falkland Islands remains unchanged. A spokesman for the Prime Minister said: "The Falkland Islands have hugely voted overwhelmingly in favour of remaining a UK overseas territory, and we've always stood behind the islanders' right to self-determination and the fact that sovereignty rests with the UK." The Falkland Islanders voted overwhelmingly in a 2013 referendum to remain a British Overseas Territory. Falklands veteran Simon Weston expressed faith that King Charles III will help smooth relations with Donald Trump during the state visit. Weston also accused Trump of having a 'hissy fit' over Britain's response to the Iran war and said Trump 'knows nothing' about the Falklands. Falkland Islander Patrick Watts MBE said the King needs to 'step up to the plate' after Trump's announcement. Watts said he is not shocked by Trump's actions and is more amazed that the American people voted him in as President.

It's a very, very disappointing, and it would appear to be retaliatory in terms of Britain not giving the USA all the support that they demanded in their attack on Iran.

Admiral Lord West, a former commanding officer of HMS Ardent, called the threats an 'insult' and said losing US support would have 'no impact' militarily. According to The Independent, Admiral Lord West described the recognition or otherwise by the US does not make the Islands less secure. The UK has a permanent military base, RAF Mount Pleasant, on the Falklands, operated solely by British forces. However, some analysts warn that a US policy change could be 'pretty significant' and might cause other countries to shift their positions, potentially leading to UN intervention. This disagreement reflects differing assessments of the practical consequences of a US diplomatic shift. If the US changes its stance, it could embolden Argentina and affect international diplomacy, even if the UK's military position remains unchanged.

Pentagon press secretary Kingsley Wilson said: "As President Trump has said, despite everything that the United States has done for our Nato allies, they were not there for us. The war department [Department of Defense] will ensure that the president has credible options to ensure that our allies are no longer a paper tiger and instead do their part. We have no further comment on any internal deliberations to that effect." A NATO official told the BBC that the founding treaty does not foresee any provision for suspension or expulsion of membership. Spain's Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said: "We do not work based on emails. We work with official documents and official positions taken, in this case, by the government of the United States."

Nothing Donald Trump does these days shocks me at all. I mean, you never know what you're going to wake up to find, what Trump has suddenly made proclamations about.

The Falkland Islands are considered by the UN to be a 'Non-Self-Governing Territory' and are subject to ongoing discussion by the Special Committee on Decolonization. The US provided discreet support for the UK during the 1982 Falklands War, including satellite and signals intelligence and Stinger missiles. The authenticity of the leaked email remains unconfirmed, and it is unclear whether the US will actually implement any of the proposed measures. The UK's formal response to a potential US policy shift is unknown, as is Argentina's official reaction. Additionally, the specific support the US requested from the UK during the Iran war and why the UK refused have not been disclosed. Whether King Charles III's state visit to the US will improve UK-US relations, as some hope, also remains uncertain.

Please leave the Falklands alone. We're a peaceful community, a financially autonomous community that wishes to remain British, and there's no desire to change to any other regime, or under any other country's control. Leave us out of this equation.

How dare they!

We do not work based on emails. We work with official documents and official positions taken, in this case, by the government of the United States.
