The Basic Court in Pristina found Vladimir Tolić and Blagoj Spasojević guilty of violating Kosovo's constitutional order and inciting terrorist activities, sentencing them to life in prison. Dušan Maksimović received a 30-year jail term. The attack began on 24 September 2023 when police responded to a lorry blockade on a bridge.
Kosovo authorities said about 30 men attacked officers with guns and grenades, killing Sergeant Afrim Bunjaku and injuring two colleagues. The armed group retreated to a 14th-century Serbian Orthodox monastery, barricading themselves inside. Three group members died in the ensuing shootout, but surviving members escaped despite being surrounded by special forces.
Proof that the attack on the Kosovo police, on the constitutional order and on the security of our country will not remain unpunished.
Prosecutors have charged 45 people in total but believe most are in Serbia and unlikely to be extradited. The self-confessed leader, Kosovo Serb politician Milan Radoičić, emerged in Serbia and claimed he personally made all logistical preparations, according to BBC News - World. He was questioned but faces no charges in Serbia and remains at large, though an Interpol warrant limits his travel.
Kosovo's acting President Albulena Haxhiu welcomed the verdict, calling it proof that the attack will not go unpunished. Kosovo authorities have cited Radoičić's ties to the Serbian List party, linked to President Aleksandar Vučić's Progressive Party, as evidence of official Serbian backing.
