Kompany declines World Cup punditry for summer rest

SportsSports
Key Points
  • Vincent Kompany has declined broadcaster offers to work as a World Cup pundit, choosing to rest after Bayern Munich's season.
  • Bayern Munich won the Bundesliga title and is chasing a treble under Kompany, with Harry Kane excelling and the team scoring 109 league goals.
  • Kompany has previous punditry experience with the BBC and Sky Sports, including during the last World Cup and other major tournaments.

Kompany's decision follows a successful campaign with Bayern Munich, which secured the Bundesliga title at the weekend and remains in contention for the Champions League and German Cup semi-finals. The team has scored 109 goals in 30 league games under his leadership, with striker Harry Kane enjoying a standout season. Bayern paid around £10.2 million to bring Kompany from Burnley, a fee considered among the highest for a manager in football.

Kompany has previous broadcasting experience, having served as a pundit for the BBC and Sky Sports during major tournaments. At the last World Cup in Qatar, he missed England's 6-2 victory over Iran due to a visa issue but became a standout contributor to the BBC's coverage. In 2019, he joined analysts like Jose Mourinho for Sky's coverage of a Manchester City-Liverpool match, and in 2016, he worked for the BBC after a thigh injury forced him to miss the European Championship.

Before his move to Bayern, Kompany lifted the Premier League trophy four times with Manchester City and managed Anderlecht and Burnley, winning the Championship with the latter before relegation the following season. Earlier this year, he addressed racial abuse allegations involving Real Madrid winger Vinicius Junior, criticizing Jose Mourinho's post-match comments. Vinicius Junior had accused Benfica winger Gianluca Prestianni of abuse during a game, after which Mourinho claimed Vinicius Junior's celebration was disrespectful and pointed to Benfica's history as proof the club is not racist. Kompany said Mourinho made a 'huge mistake' with 'unacceptable' remarks, arguing in a press conference that Mourinho attacked Vinicius Junior's character by focusing on his celebration.
