Kim Amb targets comeback after shoulder injury sidelined career

SportsSports
Key Points
  • Kim Amb suffered a shoulder injury in summer 2022 that sidelined him for nearly four years
  • The injury led to operations, pain, mental struggles, and technical challenges in javelin throwing
  • With mental coaching and surgical anchors, Amb is now planning a comeback with competitions in Germany and France

Amb's injury occurred when he landed on a rain-soaked track after a throw and his hand slipped, causing something to break in his shoulder. According to SVT Sport, Amb initially thought it was not a problem, but he felt the shoulder ball sliding out of place when he tried to throw the javelin. This injury started a long period of trouble for Amb, including operations, pain, attempts to return, and new setbacks.

According to SVT Sport, Amb experienced mental struggles and difficulty trusting his body due to the injury, noting that javelin throwing requires extreme positions, which contributed to his challenges. Amb has slowly started to dare to throw again with the help of a mental coach and eight anchors implanted in his shoulder to hold it in place. All physical tests now point in the right direction, and Amb is aiming for a competition comeback almost four years after the injury.

According to SVT Sport, Amb believes he always performs better in competition, throws better technically now, and has much longer throws in him based on physical tests showing he is back at the same level as before the injury. Amb has two competitions planned: one in mid-May in Dessau, Germany, and one in June in Nice, France. 49 meters from 2020.

Amb's dream goal is to qualify for the European Championships in Birmingham in August, where the international qualification standard is set at 83 meters.
