Key Points
  • Ken Doherty won the 1997 World Snooker Championship with a £2 cue.
  • The cue was a discarded one from a Dublin club, bought for £2 instead of £5.
  • Doherty has used the cue since age 10 and won six ranking titles with it.

Doherty defeated Stephen Hendry in the 1997 World Championship final. The cue was a discarded one left behind at a club in Dublin. The bar owner initially demanded £5 for it, but Doherty tricked him into accepting £2.

Doherty has had the cue since 1981, when he was about 10 years old, and has won six ranking titles with it. He recently changed cue just to try it out, he said in a press conference. After his 1997 victory, Doherty was welcomed home to Dublin with an open-top bus tour and a reception at the Mansion House.

Meanwhile, Wu Yize became the second-youngest winner of the World Snooker Championship title against Shaun Murphy at the weekend, according to multiple reports.
