Karolinska Institutet (KI) has received a landmark donation of 538 million kronor, primarily designated for dementia research. According to the university, this represents the largest donation to a Swedish higher education institution in modern times. The funds come from the estate of entrepreneur and inventor Leif Lundblad, who passed away last year.
' While the majority of the funds will support dementia research, a portion will also be allocated to studies on other significant public health issues including chronic pain and autoimmune diseases. The donation was announced on March 26, 2026, marking a substantial boost to medical research capabilities at Sweden's premier medical university.
The donation means an enormous amount for research into dementia diseases and other illnesses that affect large parts of the population.
