Karlstad Plans Helicopter Mosquito Control in Skåre

EnvironmentEnvironment
Key Points
  • Karlstad Municipality has applied for helicopter-based biological mosquito control in Skåre, targeting larvae from May to August.
  • The method uses a biological agent with minimal impact on humans and animals, based on practices used elsewhere in Sweden.
  • An information meeting is scheduled for April 15 to explain the control process and affected areas, with an SMS service offered for animal owners.

Karlstad Municipality has been investigating the occurrence of flood mosquitoes and methods to reduce problems when large numbers of mosquitoes hatch after floods for several years, according to the municipality. Residents of Skåre have experienced mosquito problems for many years, as reported by Nya Wermlands-Tidningen, and SVT Värmland has previously met residents in the area who described the nuisance of many mosquitoes. The municipality's efforts aim to address these persistent issues, which have impacted the local community over time.

If the required permits are obtained, biological control will be carried out from a helicopter and target mosquito larvae in water before they develop into flying mosquitoes, the municipality said. The method is based on a biological control agent used in several places in Sweden where flood mosquitoes cause problems for humans, and it involves using VectoBac G, as detailed by SVT Värmland. Flood mosquitoes will be controlled using biological methods, according to Nya Wermlands-Tidningen, with the control agent having very little impact on humans and other animals, the municipality confirmed. This approach is designed to minimize environmental disruption while effectively reducing mosquito populations.

Karlstad Municipality is planning an information meeting for residents and others who want to know more, the municipality stated. The information meeting will be held on April 15 at 6 PM at Skåre Church, and at the meeting, the municipality together with Biological Mosquito Control will explain how biological mosquito control works, when it may become relevant, and which areas may be affected. This outreach aims to ensure transparency and community involvement in the process, addressing any concerns from locals.

The municipality offers an SMS service for animal owners because control may need to be carried out with short notice from low-flying helicopters, according to the municipality. This service is intended to help pet and livestock owners prepare for potential disruptions, though it is not yet known how many animal owners have signed up for it. Additionally, the cost of the biological control program and who is funding it remain unspecified, and it is unclear whether the required permits for the biological mosquito control have been granted yet. The exact number of residents affected by the mosquito problem in Skåre is also unknown, along with the specific environmental or health risks posed by the flood mosquitoes beyond general nuisance.
