Karlstad Energi has launched a major waste management project that will distribute 50,000 new waste bins to residents across Karlstad municipality. According to SVT Värmland, the bins will be delivered to 17,000 villa owners and 2,000 vacation homes over the next twelve weeks.
Project leader Christoffer Henriksson of Karlstad Energi expressed confidence in the timeline, stating, "We can manage it." The new three-bin system per household is designed to enable home waste sorting, with the goal of reducing residual waste incineration and shifting recycling costs to packaging producers.
We can manage it.
Henriksson explained the financial implications: "The difference between burning 'wrong' waste - packaging that can be recycled - is almost 2,500 kronor per ton. Instead of paying 950 kronor/ton for residual waste incineration that must be added to customers' fees, we get 1,700 kronor per recycled ton."
The project currently focuses on single-family homes and vacation properties, but work is also underway to address waste management in apartment buildings before new legislation takes effect in 2027.
