Karlstad inaugurates Vikenpassagen tunnel for pedestrians
Key Points
  • Vikenpassagen inaugurated on May 4 with ribbon cutting
  • The tunnel is 10 meters wide and accessible, replacing old tunnel
  • Activities included coffee, art viewing, quiz walk, historic and modern trains

The new passage replaces the old Vikentunneln, which was closed in February 2023. The Vikenpassagen is 10 meters wide with gentle ramps, elevators, and escalators, making it accessible to all. Karlstad C, which the tunnel serves, is the largest hub on the Värmland Line, Sweden's busiest single-track railway.

During the inauguration, visitors could enjoy coffee, an art viewing, and a quiz walk. A historic train was displayed, and Värmlandstrafik showcased a modern train where visitors could try sitting in the driver's cab.

Project manager Niklas Gunnarsson said the work went well and finished on time. 'The Vikenpassagen offers a bright and safe connection between Karlstad city center, the travel center, and the districts south of the railway,' he said. 'I am sure that the residents of Värmland will appreciate the result.'

The rebuilding of Karlstad C includes several parts, though specific details have not been disclosed. Trafikverket collects personal data to handle inquiries in accordance with GDPR. The number of attendees and total project cost have not been released.
