Karlstad erects 4-metre climate stacks for third year
Key Points
  • Karlstad erects four-metre-high climate stacks for third year to visualise emissions.
  • Nearly half of residents shop second-hand, and food waste has halved in preschools.
  • A day for the climate event on May 8 features activities and second-hand finds.

This year the stacks will remain from April 28 to May 29, each with information panels for children and adults, as well as an exhibition on consumption changes over time, the municipality said. Visitors can also give their perspective by answering a survey. The material was developed with Naturskolan and Mariebergsskogen.

The review found that nearly half of Karlstad residents (49 percent) shop second-hand at least once every six months, a clear increase from a few years ago. The platform Smarta Kartan Karlstad, which lists over 150 actors for borrowing, repairing and reusing goods, has the potential to reduce emissions by about 11,000 tonnes annually, though the municipality did not clarify if this is based on current usage or maximum potential. Separately, Sola byggåterbruk saved 117 tonnes of carbon dioxide in one year by reusing building materials. On average, each resident throws away 43 kilograms of food per year, while food waste in the municipality's preschools has almost halved compared to 2022, although the specific baseline was not disclosed.

We are happy and proud of the environmental and climate work that Karlstad and its residents have done and are doing. At the same time, we face one of the biggest challenges of our time regarding the environment and climate. We have the opportunity to change how we live. Our consumption affects the climate every day and it is in our daily choices that the transition begins. Through the climate stacks and climate day in Mariebergsskogen, we want to inspire Karlstad residents to think anew, choose sustainably, and discover that a more climate-smart life can also be a richer life.

Cecilia Boman Lindström, Chair of the environment committee, Karlstad municipality

On May 8, the municipality will host 'A day for the climate' at Mariebergsskogen from 14:30 to 17:30, offering snacks, discarded books, an obstacle course, and a visit from Lotsa for the youngest. The event also includes competitions and second-hand finds. 'Through the climate stacks and climate day, we want to inspire residents to think anew and choose sustainably,' said Cecilia Boman Lindström, chair of the environment committee.
