Kristian Gerner, a prominent Swedish historian and Russia expert, has died at the age of 83, according to reports. The professor emeritus at Lund University passed away on Maundy Thursday following a period of illness, as confirmed by his wife Kerstin Nyström to the TT news agency.

Gerner established his academic career at Lund University, where he earned his doctorate in history in 1984 and became a lecturer in 1985. His expertise in Eastern European history led him to Uppsala University, where he served as professor of Eastern European history and culture from 1994 to 2002. He returned to Lund University as a history professor from 2002 to 2009.

As a specialist in Russian affairs, Gerner frequently appeared in Swedish media as a commentator and analyst, particularly on topics related to the collapse of the Soviet Union and Russia's geopolitical ambitions in recent decades.
