Key Points
  • Kalmar region requests exemption for 20 ambulances from work-hour rules this summer.
  • Exemption covers June to August at 15 stations, including Oskarshamn, Kalmar, and Västervik.
  • New rules require 11 hours of rest daily, but compliance is difficult during summer vacations.

The Kalmar region in Sweden has decided to request an exemption from work-hour rules for 20 ambulances this summer. The exemption would apply from June to August and cover 15 ambulance stations, including those in Oskarshamn, Kalmar, and Västervik. New work-hour rules introduced in October 2023 require employees to have 11 consecutive hours of rest per 24-hour period, but some regions cannot comply during summer when ambulance staff take vacation.

The region has sought similar exemptions in recent summers.
