Fritidsbanken in Kalmar experienced unprecedented demand for winter sports equipment during the recent winter sports break, according to local reports. The organization loaned out more than 1,000 pairs of ice skates and 400 pairs of skis as residents took advantage of snowy winter conditions for outdoor activities.
Mats Gunnarsson, operations manager for Fritidsbanken in Kalmar, described the situation as "extremely" busy, noting that they had run out of all equipment related to snow and ice. The organization had prepared for the winter season by organizing their container as early as last autumn in anticipation of increased demand.

The surge in equipment loans reflects a broader trend across Sweden during winter sports breaks, with similar reports from other cities like Östersund where Fritidsbanken locations also experienced high demand. The snowy winter conditions across the region have encouraged more families to engage in winter sports activities during the school break.
Fritidsbanken provides free loans of sports and outdoor equipment to promote physical activity and access to recreational opportunities for all residents.
