Key Points
  • Jos Verstappen unharmed after crash at Rally of Wallonia
  • Car flipped upside down and severely damaged
  • Crash occurred on dusty right-hand corner in fourth gear

The crash occurred on a right-hand corner taken in fourth gear, according to multiple reports. The surface was dusty with gravel, and Verstappen said he may have entered the corner too fast. The car hit a post, which whipped the car around, and then landed on its roof. Verstappen and his co-driver Jesper Vermeulen were forced to retire from the rally. The car sustained extensive damage, with the roof crushed and bodywork torn off.

Verstappen was in third place at the end of Saturday's play before the crash. The Rally of Wallonia takes place on asphalt. The car had pre-existing damage from an incident on the fourth stage, though the extent of that damage is not known. The team had repaired the car overnight to continue the rally.

Verstappen competed with co-driver Jesper Vermeulen, as his regular co-driver Renaud Jamoul was absent due to ankle surgery. Verstappen has been actively competing in rallying for several years since retiring from Formula 1. He has participated in events like the Dakar Rally and various European rallies.

According to Daily Express - Sport, Verstappen described himself as "all good" after the crash. In a social media post, he said: "It was a right-hand bend that I had to take in fourth gear. It was dusty, there was gravel on the surface. I think I went into the corner a bit too fast, and at the end of the corner, the car broke away. Then we hit a post. The post whipped the car around, and then we landed on the roof." He added: "The most important thing is that Jasper and I came out of the car safely. It was a big impact. But we sit in such safe cars, that shows again. I'm glad we came out of it well."

The exact date and time of the crash have not been confirmed. No other injuries were reported besides the car damage. The current condition of the car is unknown, and it is unclear how the crash will affect Verstappen's standing in the championship.
