Jönköping Faces Dual Sanitation Issues: Toilet Proposal and Repeated Feces Incidents

  • A citizen proposal calls for installing public toilets around Munksjön lake due to increased recreational use of the area.
  • Municipal councilor Mona Forsberg says the city prioritizes toilets at playgrounds and bathing areas over the lake area.
  • Separately, Jönköping police are investigating repeated incidents of someone spreading human feces at Rocksjön stadium, with the latest occurring over the weekend.

Jönköping is grappling with two separate but related sanitation issues, according to local media reports. First, a proposal has been submitted through the city's citizen suggestion system calling for the installation of public toilets around the popular walking path at Munksjön lake. The proposal notes that the walking route has been upgraded with playgrounds, barbecue areas, and recreation areas, but the lack of public toilets risks creating sanitary inconveniences for visitors.

Social Democratic municipal councilor Mona Forsberg, who chairs the municipal board, stated that the city currently prioritizes public toilets at other public locations such as playgrounds and bathing areas. 'We have mainly talked about wanting to see toilets near larger playgrounds or other public places like bathing areas,' Forsberg said. 'Sometimes a solution could be to make an agreement with a nearby restaurant.'

Separately, Jönköping is dealing with repeated incidents of someone spreading human feces at Rocksjön, particularly at the canoe stadium. According to reports, the latest incident occurred over the weekend when seating areas at the Rocksjön stadium were smeared with human feces. Peter Hagström, unit manager at the culture and leisure administration, told Jönköpings-Posten that the problem has been occurring intermittently for over a year and a half. 'He has recurring bad behavior of throwing feces, human feces, everywhere,' Hagström said. The city has filed a police report describing the incidents as 'sanitary inconveniences' and has provided police with a detailed description of the suspect.

The city's internal security group, which handles risks and works to protect municipal property, has discussed the man's behavior. Hagström noted that cleaning the stadium after such incidents represents both a negative cost and an unpleasant experience for visitors to one of Jönköping's most beautiful sports facilities.
