  • Salary requirements for work permits will rise from 80% to 90% of median salary starting June 1.
  • Companies in Jönköping County fear labor shortages due to the tighter rules.
  • Sweden Democrats leader Jimmie Åkesson defended the change, citing 500,000 unemployed Swedes.

Several companies in Jönköping County fear they will not be able to find labor when the salary requirements for obtaining a work permit are tightened this summer. The agreement among the Tidö parties means the requirement for labor migrants will increase from 80% to 90% of a median salary from June 1, equivalent to a monthly salary of 33,390 kronor. The Sweden Democrats are one of the parties that want to tighten the requirements for labor migration, and party leader Jimmie Åkesson defended the decision when he visited Jönköping on Tuesday.

He said Sweden cannot continue to import labor for low-wage jobs while there are 500,000 unemployed Swedes. Frida Boklund, regional manager for Företagarna, called the change worthless and outrageous, saying it is more than many Swedish workers earn today, and fears many companies in the county will struggle to find labor. Although exceptions for certain occupational groups are discussed, concern is high among business leaders.
