Key Points
  • John Laidlaw, serving time for attempted murder, escaped while working as a car valet at Kirklevington Grange Prison.
  • He absconded shortly after 2pm on Monday and was reported missing after 4.30pm.
  • Police are conducting searches with dogs and a drone, and the public is warned not to approach him.

30pm, police said. When last seen, he was wearing a navy blue sweatshirt, blue cargo style trousers and white and blue trainers, police said. Officers are deploying dogs and a drone to assist in tracking him while scanning CCTV footage, the force added.

Members of the public are strongly advised not to approach him, police warned. Superintendent John Wrintmore confirmed that Laidlaw had regularly been on unsupervised day release from the prison. He was transferred to Kirklevington in 2024, police said.

"We have officers and dogs doing land searches around the area of the prison, and we have deployed the drone," Wrintmore said. The exact circumstances of his escape remain unknown, and it is not clear where he is now.
