Jacob Barrett Laursen, a 31-year-old Danish defender, has retired from professional football. He reportedly made the decision after a persistent knee injury that affected his time at BK Häcken, a Swedish club. Laursen joined BK Häcken in the summer of 2023 from Standard Liège.
According to reports, he played only one Allsvenskan match last year due to the injury, and his contract with the club expired at the turn of the year. In an interview with Campo, Laursen stated that the worst part was that it was not an active choice but a forced one, and he found it very difficult to accept. He mentioned that after his last match against IK Sirius in May last year, he experienced severe pain and was prescribed morphine.

A knee specialist reportedly advised him that two operations would require a long recovery and suggested considering retirement to have a normal life after football. Laursen has also played for Arminia Bielefeld and Odense BK and was a youth professional at Juventus.
