Italian biathlete Tommaso Giacomel has undergone a successful heart operation and will miss the World Cup event in Kontiolahti, Finland next week. The 25-year-old broke off the mass start at the Olympics after two shootings when he needed medical care. Tests showed he had atrial fibrillation and needed an ablation, an invasive procedure on the heart.
The operation went well and he is expected to be discharged from the hospital on Thursday. He will undergo further examinations before he can resume training. Giacomel is currently ranked second overall in the World Cup.
