Children of highly educated parents and those living in areas with good socioeconomic conditions remain overrepresented in municipal culture schools in Sweden, according to new statistics from the Swedish Arts Council. Between 2018 and 2024, only small changes have occurred. Children with foreign backgrounds and those with poorer socioeconomic conditions continue to be underrepresented.
Nearly 75 percent of all municipalities had a queue for the culture school in 2024, with 66 percent of those queuing not already participating in another course. Around 190,000 participated in term courses in 2024, a number similar to previous years. 13 percent of municipalities had a fee-free culture school in 2024.
