Luc Tardif, the president of the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF), announced he will not seek re-election, meaning a new president will be elected in October. Tardif has been IIHF president since 2021. The announcement was made on Sunday, and Swedish Ice Hockey Association president Anders Larsson, an IIHF board member, learned of it shortly before it became public.
Larsson said he and other members knew there was a possibility Tardif might leave but did not know the decision. National federations must notify any nominations by June 1, and no nominations have been presented yet. Larsson did not rule out running as a candidate, stating it is too early to say and that the Swedish association board needs to discuss the situation.

In Russia, there is joy over Tardif's decision, with national team coach Vatjeslav Bykov expressing hope it will lead to Russian athletes regaining the right to participate internationally. Larsson believes the Russia issue could be important in the election and that it is not unthinkable candidates from the eastern side will emerge.
