A tenant in Gothenburg, Sweden, has been awarded a refund of 144,000 kronor (approximately $13,800) after paying excessive rent for an extended period, according to reports from multiple Swedish news outlets. The case was decided by the Hyresnämnden (Rent Tribunal), which ruled that the woman had been overcharged for her apartment in central Gothenburg.
The tenant had been renting a 144-square-meter, four-room apartment since 2024 for 25,000 kronor per month. However, the tribunal determined that the negotiated rent from April 2025 should have been 13,726 kronor per month. In addition to the substantial refund, the tribunal ordered that her monthly rent be reduced by over 10,000 kronor going forward.
The rental company involved agreed to partial repayment but argued they were entitled to additional charges due to renovations made to the property. The tribunal sided with the tenant's position but acknowledged the company's right to add 150 kronor per month for heating and electricity costs.
The case was first reported by Göteborgs-Posten, the local Gothenburg newspaper, with subsequent coverage by regional newspaper Sydsvenskan and English-language outlet The Local Sweden.
