Arts & entertainmentArts
Key Points
  • S/S Primus is being restored by Medelpads Sjöhistoriska Förening as a historic steamboat from 1875.
  • The boat has been integral to Sundsvall's maritime and industrial history since the 1870s.
  • Restoration aims to return it to passenger service while preserving its original character.

S/S Primus was built in 1875 at Lindbergs mekaniska verkstad in Stockholm and was ordered by sawmill owner Fredrik Bünsow at Skönviks sawmill. The steamboat has always been part of Sundsvall's maritime and industrial history, following the development of industry, the harbor, and the city since the 1870s. The association has long worked on restoring the mechanical parts.

The boat's hull, exterior, and superstructure need renovation to preserve it as a living cultural treasure. The goal is to restore the boat to how it looked during its best days so it can carry passengers from Sundsvall to Tjuvholmen or other nearby places. According to SVT Mittnytt, Tobias Andersson emphasized preserving the boat's original character.

We want to preserve as much original feel as possible in the boat.

Tobias Andersson, Captain

In summers, S/S Primus operates passenger traffic and functions as a floating museum on Sundsvall's waters.

So the public can enjoy the vessel.
