  • A hiker was found dead in New England after a snowstorm left him trapped.
  • Officials determined the hiker was unprepared for the winter conditions.
  • Separate skiing accidents resulted in deaths in Sweden and Norway.

Wood's family became concerned after not hearing from him for two days as he hiked in the White Mountains and they contacted officials. The hiker began his journey at the Lafayette Campground in Lincoln on Friday, planning to camp and hike for the weekend. The weather that weekend in Lincoln was sporadic, with temperatures reaching 66 degrees Fahrenheit the day Wood arrived on April 17 but dropping below freezing on April 20.

Officials determined that Wood was not prepared for the three to five inches of snow that fell between Sunday and Monday, noting that he had expected warmer conditions. Officials began an extensive search on Tuesday involving several agencies around the Lonesome Lake and Kinsman Pond area. They located Wood's body at 7.41pm that same day and carried it out of the trail at 1.10am the next morning.

Officials issued a safety warning to the public: 'New Hampshire Fish and Game would like to remind hikers that it is still winter in the mountains with deep snow, precipitation, and freezing temperatures.' According to WCVB, six hikers from Massachusetts were rescued in the White Mountains this past week. Fish and Game Sgt. Christopher McKee told the outlet that hikers should expect winter conditions in the area. He added that proper preparation includes informing others about your trip, where you will be, and when you will be there.

In a separate incident, a man in his 20s, who studied in Åre but was from the Stockholm area, died in an accident, according to reports. During the accident, he was skiing in Gästrappet and fell, receiving help quickly but his life could not be saved. The death report from the National Board of Forensic Medicine shows that the man died from blunt force trauma that caused extensive internal bleeding. The police have now concluded their investigation and there is no suspicion of any crime.

Meanwhile in Norway, a man in his 50s was found dead in the afternoon near a ski resort in Hemsedal. According to the police, it appears that the man skied onto an unprepared area between two slopes and fell. Relatives have been notified, and the police are investigating the incident further to clarify the course of events and causal factors.
