The current container terminal in Västhamnen has limitations in depth and quay length, preventing larger ships from calling at Helsingborg, according to officials. In the new location at Planteringen, a quay approximately 650 meters long is planned, and the seabed will be dredged to at least nine meters depth. The new terminal is expected to be completed in 2033 and will handle more than double the current number of containers per year.
The municipal council decided on a direction decision and a preliminary agreement with Kemira, which owns land in the area. The agreement gives the municipality control over the land, a prerequisite for moving forward, said Patrik Möller, development manager. The port move is part of a larger urban development plan for southern Helsingborg, also decided on April 21. The land at the new location is contaminated due to previous activities and a landfill, requiring extensive investigations. The total cost of the project and specific contaminants have not been disclosed.
