Hay fever season peaks as pollen count hits very high
Key Points
  • Pollen count to hit 'Very High' across western UK on April 25
  • Close to 10 million people in England affected by hay fever
  • No evidence non-drowsy antihistamines cause weight gain or tolerance

Dr Punam Krisham, an NHS GP and health expert, addressed common myths about antihistamines. She said there is no significant evidence that non-drowsy antihistamines cause weight gain, and people do not develop a tolerance to them. She also noted that there is no single antihistamine that works better than others; patients should find one that works for them.

Regarding fexofenadine, Dr Krisham warned that orange juice, grapefruit juice, and apple juice can block the transporter in the gut that absorbs the medication, potentially reducing its effectiveness. She also cautioned that stopping antihistamines abruptly can cause rebound symptoms.
