The movie centers on Anna, played by Halle Bailey, a New York City woman whose life has stalled since her mother's death. In the story, Anna meets Matteo, an Italian man who has left an empty villa in Tuscany, and she flies to Italy, breaks into his home, and becomes his fake fiancée. Matteo's adopted brother Michael, portrayed by Regé-Jean Page, arrives and steals Anna's heart, creating a love triangle.

Just to watch Rege perform and serenade Anna's character, it was a joyous moment on set. Everybody was laughing, and we were all very impressed by Regé's vocals. It was pretty darn good. I told him: 'You killed that'. Everybody loves the Mario song [Let Me Love You], and it's near and dear to our hearts. I remember when I first heard that song. When you hear it, you're taken back. That was a great one to choose for that moment because it's universal and sweet.
