Research shows that 40 percent of sports clubs report a major need to renovate their facilities, and every other sports association experiences significant renovation needs. The RF received 240 million SEK for construction and renovation projects at the beginning of the year, but applications for funding amount to 360 million SEK. The government has pledged 250 million SEK for sports facilities in 2026 and 2027.
However, the situation remains essentially unchanged since 2022. Renovation needs include leaking roofs, poor ventilation, closed changing rooms, and lack of toilets, according to research. Almost 8 out of 10 municipalities say renovating existing facilities is a challenge for long-term planning.
Anna Iwarsson, chairwoman of the RF, said that facilities are crucial for associations and that neglected renovation risks losing many venues. She called for a permanent national facility function to support municipalities with knowledge and financing. com, Iwarsson described the high application volume as showing the great need, and she noted that the government's investment is a good start but requires multi-year commitment.
